At a special Town Meeting on September 6, 2017 a vote was passed to terminate the town’s membership in the Windham Solid Waste Management District (WSWMD) effective July 1, 2018. The Selectboard recommended this vote for a number of reasons including poor service, cost of service and for the purpose of gaining more control over costs associated with running our Transfer Station.
Becoming our own Waste District required the creation of a Solid Waste Implementation Plan (SWIP). The SWIP is a summary of the current solid waste management practices and proposed management strategies for the Town of Whitingham. Residents using the Transfer Station will not notice any difference. The changes are behind the scenes, such as providing more information on the town website and more reporting of waste/recycling collected and transferred off-site. The biggest change will be that the town will now be responsible to provide Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events. Dates of when these events will be held will be posted.
In the process of creating the SWIP the Selectboard also created the “Civil Ordinance Regulating the Management of Solid Waste and Variable Rate Pricing”. Both the SWIP and the Ordinance are available for review below or in the Town Clerk’s office during regular business hours.
